Afghanistan Avenue of Honour

Whenever I have walked down the Avenue of Honour, honouring the fallen, I feel this incredible heaviness. I’m not sure if it’s because as a mother with a son, who is alive and well, I feel such sadness at the loss these families have had to endure, and continue to endure.  I brought him to visit one day, a few years ago when he was 23, and he also struggled. I have visited four times with family and friends, and it gets me every time. It respectfully reminds me at how tenuous life can be.

We can not bring back those sons and daughters who lost their lives, but I hope this tribute, beside the lake, reminds us of their sacrifice.

This memorial dedication is in Yungaburra Village, Atherton Tablelands, North Queensland, about an hour inland from Cairns.

THE AVENUE OF HONOUR

The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour is a living memorial dedicated to the memory of all who served in the fight against terror in Afghanistan and to those brave and selfless Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of freedom and liberty.”

  1. Governments make the decision to get involved in wars & it’s others who pay the ultimate price for the Governments decision. War is always such a tragedy for all those who lose their lives.
